15th September, 1914 : After the proud success of the taking of Rabaul, the Navy has been hit by the loss of one of its two submarines, the AE1 with 35 hands. It disappeared yesterday afternoon while returning to Rabaul from patrol in what was not a defeat, but a grim accident. The Naval Board stated that the submarine disappeared without trace in calm, but very deep waters. There were no enemy units in the area at the time.

[Almost one hundred years later, Australia still has only two functioning submarines]
