17th September, 1908 : A United States army officer died today in an aircraft piloted by Orwille Wright. Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge, 26, of the US Army Signal Corps is the first person to have died in a crash involving an aircraft since the two Wright brothers proved that such flight was possible in 1903. Orwille Wright was seriously injured in the crash but is expected to recover. The aircraft fell from a height of 75 feet.
