NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

19th September, 1914 : Judging by their eagerness, the men of the first Australian expeditionary force should go far. The force is largely being trained at a camp in Broadmeadows, Victoria and brigades of men in combat dress can be seen practising attacks and rearguard actions with obvious enthusiasm. They will be armed not just with rifles, but with phrase book to help them in the coming battles in France and Germany. They are not the usual travellers’ phrase books, but packed with lists of military terms and optimistic sentences like “I want to go to Berlin”.

[None got to Berlin and far too many did not even get home]
