NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
21st September, 1976 : Limits on the use of fluorocarbon gases as propellants in aerosol spray cans are needed to save the earth’s ozone layer, according to a report released in Washington by a committee of the US National Academy of Sciences. The committee said it could not yet recommend when limits ought to be imposed, but said there is strong evidence that the fluorocarbons, called Freons, enter the atmosphere and release chlorine which attacks the ozone layer. The long-term result of this, say the committee, could be that the temperatures in the earth’s atmosphere will gradually rise, with such consequences as vastly changed weather conditions and a rise in sea levels.
