NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
12th November, 1987 : Moscow’s Communist Party boss, Boris Yeltsin, has been fired after criticising Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet leader, for tolerating a slow pace of his reforms. Yeltsin, a candidate member of the ruling Politburo, has been given a minor Ministerial post. He is a protege of Gorbachev and an outspoken supporter of the policies of perestroika and glasnost. The dismissal stems from a bitter confrontation at a Party meeting when Yeltsin strongly attacked Yegor Ligachev, the number two man in the Kremlin and leading ideologist, for opposing the Gorbachev reforms.
