NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
19th November, 1911 : Dr Douglas Mawson and members of his Australian Antarctic expedition sail from Melbourne today for Hobart and the start of their voyage of discovery of the great ice continent. Dr Mawson hopes to sail from Hobart, on the Aurora, on Saturday, December 2. The entire party looks in the best of health but are still anxious to raise the remaining £9,000 of the £50,000 needed for their 32-man expedition. Dr Mawson will leave a team on Macquarie Island to do meteorological work while his party explores the ice-lands. He expressed concern that the Federal Government might not complete a radio station in Tasmania in time to receive his transmissions from the Antarctic.
