november / 24

24th November, 1932 : Suddenly things are not looking so good for Hitler’s Nazis. With 196 seats they remain the largest party in the Reichstag, but in this month’s election they lost some 2,000,000 votes and 34 seats. They went into the campaign short of funds after big business, alarmed by Nazi cooperation with Communists in the Reichstag and in the Berlin transport strike, switched their money to the Nationalist Party, which backs the Chancellor, Franz von Papen. The Nationalists took votes from the Nazis and now have 52 seats. The tide that was going to sweep the Nazis to power appears to be ebbing.
