NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
6th December, 1905 : The Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen has arrived at Fort Egbert, Alaska, after a perilous two-and-a-half-year voyage along America’s frozen Arctic coast from Atlantic to Pacific. The search for the elusive North-West Passage has claimed many sailors’ lives over the centuries and few thought that the explorer would survive in his 47-foot cutter, which was icebound for nearly two years. Not only did the Norwegian survive, but he found the magnetic North Pole en route. It is on King William Island, slightly shifted from the spot located by Briton John Ross 60 years ago.
