NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
15th December, 1934 : War clouds are gathering over the Horn of Africa after an incident involving Italian and Abyssinian troops at Wal Wal, a desert oasis near the border with Italian Somaliland. In a telegram to the League of Nations in Geneva, the Abyssinian Government has drawn attention to “the gravity of situation”. The incident happened when a joint Anglo-Abyssinian commission, seeking to settle the boundary line in the area, arrived at Wal Wal to find the Italians in occupation. The Italians apparently suddenly opened fire on the commission’s Abyssinian escort. Foreign observers are recalling a previous situation when Italy attacked Abyssinia at Adowa in 1896 and was roundly defeated. The feeling is that Benito Mussolini is seeking a return match.
