28th December, 1971 : All foreign airlines flying into Seoul have joined in a threat to ban tourist flights to the South Korean capital after a Christmas fire in a tourist hotel killed 156 and injured 70 others. Thirty-eight of the victims died jumping from the upper floors of the 22-storey Taeyunak Hotel, which, like many of Seoul’s tourist hotels, is not fitted with an outside fire escape and has a minimum of fire-fighting equipment. The fire is believed to have started in the hotel’s coffee shop. Police say they will issue warrants against the hotel’s owner and general manager, accusing them of severe negligence.

[ Laissez faire approach is far too dangerous – some limited, and enforced regulations are unfortunately needed to rein in human greed.]
