6th February, 1956 : The French Premier, Guy Mollet, was hissed, booed, pelted with tomatoes, stoned, and attacked with tear gas by mobs of French settlers when he arrived in Algeria today for talks with the settlers and Arab leaders. The talks take place against a background of 15 months guerrilla warfare mounted by revolutionary Arab nationalists in FLN, the National Liberation Front. The settlers, fearing Mollet will make concession to the FLN, chanted “To the gallows, Mollet”, as he retreated into Government House surrounded by 3,000 Republican Guards specially flown in from Paris.
