15th February, 1933 : Franklin D. Roosevelt, US President-elect, narrowly escaped assassination tonight after giving a speech to a crowd of 10,000 in Bay Front Park, Miami. As he sat in his car five shots rang out, wounding Anton Cermak, the Mayor of Chicago, who was standing on the running board of the car, and four other people. Mayor Cermak is not expected to live. The would-be assassin, Guiseppe Zingara from Hackensack in New Jersey, was knocked to the ground by a policeman and arrested. Police quoted the gunman as saying: “I’d kill every president.” Found in his clothing was a newspaper clipping about the assassination of President McKinley by an anarchist in 1901.
