25th February, 1949 : After 42 days of often acrimonious talks, Israel and Egypt signed an armistice on the island of Rhodes yesterday. Dr Ralph J Bunche, the United Nations mediator, has finally managed to bring the two sides together by omitting some of the more contentious issues from the agreement. There is no mention, for instance, of Beersheba, the strategic crossroads town in the Negev Desert. Under the original UN partition plan it was Arab, but the Israelis have since captured it. The armistice falls a long way short of a lasting peace.
