Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) – “Our intellect cannot have direct and primary knowledge of individual material objects. The reason is that the principle of individuation of material objects is individual matter; and our intellect understands by abstracting ideas from such matter. But what is abstracted from individual matter is universal. So our intellect is not directly capable of knowing anything which is not universal.“
