7th May, 1961 : A former British diplomat, George Blake, received a record 42-year jail sentence at Old Bailey for spying. The 38-year-old self-confessed spy is said to have passed to the Russians every document he could get hold of during the nine and a half years he spent working in Germany and Lebanon. British Lord Chief Justice Parker said his treachery had “rendered much of this country’s efforts completely useless.” Blake was captured by the Communists during the Korean War when he was British Vice-Consul in Seoul. He was held for three years and is thought to have been brainwashed.

[Today the brainwashing is done in our own institutions of “higher” learning at our own cost.]
