23rd May, 1958 : A new kind of vehicle which rides just above ground on a cushion of air has been invented by Christopher Cockerell, a Suffolk boat-builder. It has been named Hovercraft. The air cushion is generated under the flat-bottomed vehicle with a fan of comparatively modest power. Inward-facing jets of air round the edge help to maintain the pressure of the cushion. Beside being frictionless, air cushion suspension would work just as well over water as over land, giving Hovercraft amphibious capabilities.
