NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

25th May, 1950 : French forces are feeling all the fury of the Communists in North Vietnam and they are appealing to the United States for military support. Four well-armed Viet Minh battalions attacked three French companies at the poorly defended Dong Khe outpost in Tonkin province. The Communists, trained by the Chinese across the border, were armed with American howitzers seized by Mao Tse-tung’s forces from retreating nationalists. The Viet Minh guerillas had the French on the run until they were scattered by aerial bombardment. The French have appealed to the US for military equipment, particularly planes.

[US declined any assistance to the French. Exactly one month later North Korea attacked the South]
