27th May, 1971 : Neville Bonner, the Queensland President of the One People of Australia League, is certain to become the first Aboriginal Member of an Australian Parliament after his selection for a Senate vacancy created by the appointment of Dame Annabelle Rankin of Queensland as High Commissioner to New Zealand. Mr Bonner wept as the Liberal Party’s selection council announced the result. By convention, State Governments accept the recommendation of the Party whose Senator is to be replaced, but Mr Bonner will have to contest his seat at the next Federal election. He said he was proud an Aborigine had finally made a complete breakthrough.
