june memories / 01

1st June, 1917 : Britain may at last have found the answer to the U-Boat menace in convoys of merchant vessels protected by warships. More than 100 British merchant ships were sunk by German submarines last month and fierce arguments have been raging in both the War Cabinet and the Admiralty as to how they can best be protected. Many in the Navy believed there were not enough warships available for escort duty. The first protected convoy has just arrived from Gibraltar without mishap and another from the US is expected within days.

[All this had to be learned all over again in World War II]
