10th June, 1949 : Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell’s nightmare novel about a future world ruled through thought control by “Big Brother” is, he explains, not so much a precise prediction of what sort of society will arrive, as a warning of what could happen if ideas of totalitarianism develop to their logical conclusions. It was not an attack on socialism or on the Labour Party, which he supported.
