NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

14th June, 1975 : Mrs Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister, was found guilty in the Allahabad High Court of electoral corruption. Her election to the Lok Sabha, the Indian House of Commons, was declared null and void by Justice Jag Mohan Lal Sinha, who barred her from public office for six years. The case arose out of accusations that Mrs Gandhi had illegally obtained the help of Government officials to construct rostrums and supply power for loudspeakers in her election campaign.

[That was almost forty years ago and on another continent. If the same standard was applied to Julia Gillard here today, she would be barred from public office for 666 years]
