june memories / 15

15th June, 1932 : Robert Menzies, the Victorian Attorney-General, was today named Deputy Premier in Sir Stanley Argyle’s United Australia Party Government. Menzies, who is only 38, is considered one of the brightest young men in conservative politics. He is the president of the Party, one of the founders of the Young Nationalists and in 1929 became the country’s youngest KC. His win today is viewed as a victory of the Young Nationalists over older members of the Party. Menzies said today that unpopular decisions might be needed to get the State back in financial shape.
