june memories / 18

18th June, 1941 : The Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, in a special broadcast to the nation, put Australia on a total war footing. In one of the most momentous speeches ever by an Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies outlined the plans to restructure Federal Cabinet; increase the strength of the defence forces; increase the workforce by drawing on the service of women; severely restrict civil use of petrol, and control shipping, road and rail transport. Other proposals include controls on profits, prohibition of strikes and a threat to jail Communist agitators.

[Perhaps one day someone will write a book about the shameful activities of Australian trade unions at the wartime]
