20th June, 1906 : Prohibitionists, supported by many church leaders around Australia, are demanding that all forms of gambling outside racecourses be made illegal, and that drinking be controlled. Moves are being made to abolish the Melbourne Cup holiday. Clergy have declared racecourses damaging to the Christian character. Victoria has presented legislation banning all lotteries, gaming houses and street betting, and restricting race meetings. It is illegal to use telephones in any gaming, betting, or bawdy house, and houses of “disorderly entertainment”. Some reformers are proposing a ban on future work for women in bars and betting shops.
