24th June, 1943 : A political furore has broken out over a plan to abandon part of Australia to the Japanese in the event of an invasion. According to the Labor Minister, Mr Ward, the Brisbane Line strategy adopted by the previous Government would have shattered the morale of the people if the facts had been known. Mr Ward said the plan provided for all of Australia north of a line north of Brisbane and following a diagonal course to a point north of Adelaide to be abandoned. The Opposition Leader, Mr Fadden, at first denied the existence of the plan.
