29th June, 1912 : Cocaine, chloroform and ether have been condemned by American surgeons meeting in New York this month as unnecessary and dangerous anaesthetics. Cocaine is said to be the worst of all – one doctor said it would produce “a race of fiends” – but it is hoped that soon none of these three forms of anaesthetics will be used. Nitrous oxide gas has been recommended instead, as it does not produce unpleasant after-effects and it is not poisonous. A prize has been offered for the design of a machine to deliver such gas.
