5th July, 1950 : American troops fought their first major engagement today and were badly mauled when 40 North Korean tanks overran their forward positions south of Suwon. The Communist tanks were backed by infantry, outnumbering the Americans two to one. American artillery, firing at close quarters, knocked out five of the Russian-built T34 tanks, and the infantry destroyed two more. But they could not cope with them all and when their ammunition ran out they were forced to abandon their wounded and equipment.

The Americans are now fighting a series of desperate delaying actions, holding up the invaders while more troops are flown in. General MacArthur’s HQ announced tonight that bombers and fighters from the carrier Valley Forge and the British carrier, HMS Triumph, have made a series of highly successful strikes against military targets in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.
