NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
15th July, 1954 : America entered the era of jet air passenger transport today when the four-engined Boeing 707 made its maiden flight from Seattle. The new aircraft uses many of the developments of Boeing’s massive jet bomber programmes, but with its engines hung individually in pods beneath the wings so that a failure or fire in one would not affect another. William E Boeing’s aircraft is much larger than the world’s first passenger jet, the Comet, having a wing span of 130 feet and a length of 128 feet. It will be able to carry 219 passengers at a top speed of over 600 mph.
