NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
19th July, 1903 : Maurice Garin today won the first Tour de France in fine style, arriving back in Paris 2 hours 49 minutes ahead of his closest rival, the unknown Pothier, “the butcher of Sens”. Only 20 of the 60 entrants finished the gruelling race, the creation of journalist and promoter Henri Desgrange. It took them 19 days to cross France in six stages travelling from Paris through Lyon, Marseilles, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes.
