23rd July, 1960 : Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike, widow of the assassinated Prime Minister and leader of Ceylon’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party was sworn in as the world’s first woman Prime Minister. In the general election three days ago her party won 75 seats out of 150. Mrs Bandaranaike, who entered politics only after the death of her husband last September, swore to carry on his “socialist programmes”.
