NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

26th July, 1908 : The German car, Protos, was first to reach Paris in the race from New York, but there were no celebrations. The “winner” was the American Thomas car because the Protos had been penalised for travelling part of the way by train. When the Protos was delayed by repairs in America it was shipped by rail to Seattle in order to sail with the Thomas car to Russia. The Protos was not disqualified, but received an ultimately decisive 15-day penalty. Its driver, Lieutenant Koeppen, said: “I wish the roads in America were as nice as the people.”

[I wonder if the newer model of Protos would make it.]
