31st July, 1914 : Australians would defend Great Britain to “our last man and our last shilling” if it became involved in war with Germany, the leader of the Labor Opposition, Andrew Fisher, said tonight. Mr Fisher referred to Britain’s crisis during a campaign meeting for the September double dissolution election. “Should the worst happen after everything has been done that honour will permit, we Australians will help and defend her to our last man and our last shilling”, Mr Fisher said. But he hoped that international arbitration could avert Europe being convulsed by the greatest war of any time.
