6th August, 1919 : Mustafa Kemal Pasha, hero of the Dardanelles and Gallipoli, has outlined at a congress at Erzurum his goal of forming a republican regime. Kemal has called for a nationalist congress at Sivas to further the movement of national resistance to the peace terms agreed upon by the Allies. The peace conference intends to apply the principles of self-determination to the Arab and Armenian minorities and has sanctioned the partition of the Ottoman Empire by France, Italy and Greece. But the landing of 20,000 Greek troops in May sparked resistance.
