august memories / 11

11th August, 1908 : King Edward VII of Britain and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany met at Friedrichshof Castle, Kronberg today and talked alone for three hours. The British Government backed the King’s desire to meet the Kaiser, his nephew, to ease growing tension. Ministers are anxious to learn more about the build-up of German forces, especially the navy. This is happening at a time when spending on the British armed forces was cut by £2 million in the last Budget.

[ The Defense Budget of Great Britain today shows that nothing has been learned from the two world wars – it is always wrong to hope that others will follow]
