NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
20th August, 1912 : General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, died at his home near London today. He was 83. He started to preach at the age of 17, but he was expelled from two Methodist churches because of his wish to preach in the streets rather than the pulpit. His main mission began in a tent in East London in 1865. The army name and uniforms were adopted in 1877 and there are now 4,000 corps and 13,000 officers spread throughout the world.
[Today it is over 1.5 million.]
