august memories / 21

21st August, 1961 : Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s veteran nationalist leader, was visited at his home near Nairobi today by a British District Commissioner, who handed him a gold signet ring and a black walking stick with a curved elephant’s head handle. These treasured possessions were given back to him to symbolise his return to freedom after nine years of detention and restriction. Kenyatta, now 71, was sentenced to hard labour in 1953 for running the secret terrorist organisation, the Mau Mau. He will meet African leaders tomorrow to discuss the forthcoming conference in London on the colony’s future. The man whom a British governor called “a leader of darkness and death” seems to be coming out of the shadows.
