august memories / 26

26th August, 1936 : The Anglo-Egyptian treaty signed today by Anthony Eden and Nahas Pasha, the Prime Minister, end the British protectorate over Egypt and secures for Britain control over the Suez Canal for twenty years. The alliance will continue after that in perpetuity and Britain will retain the right to keep 10,000 troops in the canal zone. The RAF remains free to fly anywhere over Egyptian territory, but Egypt now becomes an independent state after 50 years of occupation.

[The control of the Suez Canal today is as actual as it was then, but not so easy any more. The Muslim Brotherhood, supported even by the Obama’s America, has its own ideas about who will or will not be allowed to pass.]
