NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
29th August, 1929 : The airship Graf Zeppelin completed an historic trip around the world today when she returned to Lakehurst, New Jersey, 21 days seven hours and 26 minutes after she took off. The giant rigid dirigible along with her crew of 37 and 16 passengers, left Lakehurst in the early hours of August 7 and made only three stops on her 19,500-mile round-the-world trip. The airship, captained by Dr Hugo Eckener, first flew to her home base of Friedrichshafen in Germany. From there she travelled over Siberia to Japan, where she stopped in Tokyo. She then flew westwards over the Pacific Ocean to Los Angeles, where she stopped again before returning to the east coast at Lakehurst where she landed at 8.47 a.m.
