NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

31st August, 1914 : Being German is becoming a distinct liability in Australia, and even more so in Britain, where hundreds of suspected spies have been rounded up. In Australia, a number of German clubs and shops have been raided, but as yet no evidence of espionage has been found. It is expected that the Federal Government will move to close all German clubs, something which the police has already recommended. There has been a rush by Germans to be naturalised. A record 1,093 Germans and 123 Austrians became Australian citizens in August, up from the previous month’s total of 164.
