2nd November, 1905 : Mrs Warren’s Profession, which has twice been been refused a licence by the Lord Chamberlain, was presented in a New York theatre this week and promptly closed by the police. Mr Arnold Daly and his actors were arrested for offences against public decency. The magistrate adjourned the case in order to read Mr Bernard Shaw’s notorious play about prostitution, written in 1893. Tickets for it had changed hands at high prices.
