november memories / 13

13th November, 1907 : A French inventor, Paul Cornu, today achieved a first flight in a new type of aircraft which lifts off vertically from the ground powered by two motor-driven propellors or rotors above the pilot. He wants to win a 50,000 francs prize on offer to the first Frenchman to complete an aerial circuit of one kilometre – even though today he only managed to get one and a half metres off the ground. However, his brother did not help today’s flight by jumping onto the aircraft as it took off, fearful that it was going out of control.
