NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

14th November, 1909 : President William Taft has settled the row between his Army and Navy over the best site for a new naval base to defend the US from a Japanese attack. Taft has decided on Pearl Harbour in the Hawaiian Islands. This will please the Army, who argued that the Navy’s preferred spot, Subic Bay in the Philippines, was, indefensible. The Army said that a site closer to home would give the fleet more chance to intercept Japanese ships heading for the US West Coast.
