20th November, 1926 : The British Empire had an historic facelift today. An Imperial Conference in London announced that Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Newfoundland will be self-governing dominions. Under the Crown they will have equal status with Britain as members of the British Commonwealth of nations and be masters of their own destiny. The King’s title will be changed to acknowledge that, although the Irish Free State is also a Dominion, the King is no longer its sovereign. In deference to Irish nationalist sentiment the words “United Kingdom” are therefore being dropped from the title. The unique non-independent status of India remains unchanged. In Australia a spokesman for the Prime Minister said: “Even if we have a personality of our own, we all remain British.”
