22nd November, 1963 : Lyndon B Johnson was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States this afternoon within hours of the assassination of President Kennedy. The new President will serve for the remainder of Mr Kennedy’s term of office until January 1965. The oath of office was administered under the most dramatic circumstances in the Presidential aircraft with Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy standing alongside the new President, her pink suit stained with her husband’s blood. The aircraft then took off for Washington bearing the murdered President’s body and carrying his successor to assume the burden of office. When it arrived at Andrews Air Force base, Mr Johnson, visibly shocked, said: “I will do my best, that is all I can do. I ask for your help, and God’s.”
