NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
25th November, 1935 : King George II of Greece returned to his country today after 12 years in exile, restored to his throne by a referendum. He received a welcome from his people which was friendly, even if not exactly exuberant. General Knodylis, who crushed the anti-monarchist revolt led by the former Premier Venizelos last March, seems set to be the power behind the throne. “The presence of the King as supreme arbiter”, he says, “will bring an end to internal dissensions. A new era starts from today”.
[The King did not last long; a referendum or not. Now a new era starts in Greece every second day.]
