26th November, 1959 : The Minister for Defence, Athol Townley, today gave Australia’s young men a new sense of freedom and cause for celebration when he announced compulsory National Service training would end from January 1. More than 200,000 youths have received military training under the National Service Scheme which was reintroduced in 1951. Compulsory military training was first introduced in Australia in 1911 with a scheme for all boys over 12 years of age to take part in school cadet corps training.

[It is a matter of debate whether the celebrations were not too premature. Indonesia’s military has 476,000 active personel, Australia 57,994.]
