november memories / 29

29th November, 1973 : Governor Ronald Reagan of California arrived in Melbourne yesterday – followed by a storm of controversy. His trip to Australia as a special Presidential trade representative, and to raise money for the Red Cross, has been criticised by the US media, who claim he has “parlayed” a modest charity fund-raising trip to Victoria into a full-scale Presidential trade mission – at taxpayers’ expense. At a press conference in Melbourne, Mr Reagan was vague about what the trade mission involved, and protesters have dogged him shouting “Yankee Go Home”.

[It seems that our protesters got their instruction from some very prescient organisation – KGB?]
