NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

2nd December, 1904 : A public meeting and demonstration organised by Mr James Oddie JP who witnessed the night of the Eureka Stockade on December 3, 1854, was held in Ballarat this evening. Several old Ballarat pioneers were among the large attendance. Copies of a 60-page booklet entitled The History of the Eureka Stockade were distributed. A resolution that the antiquated state system of police should be superseded by a modern British municipal system was carried. In 1854 the State Police controlled the collection of gold licences at the point of a bayonet and were responsible for the murder of a number of innocent diggers.
