3rd December, 1954 : Senator Joseph McCarthy was condemned today by the US Senate for conduct unbecoming to a Senator. The vote was 67 to 22, with all the Democrats and about half the Republicans voting against the Wisconsin Senator. Although McCarthy said he was determined to go on to investigate Communists in defence establishments, today’s decision is clearly the beginning of the end of his influence. Next January the chairmanship of the Senate investigating committee passes to a Democrat. He still has his supporters, however. Senator Jenner charged today that Democrats had allowed the Communists into Government and that there was even evidence that they had penetrated the Republican Party.
