9th December, 1949 : With the Chinese Civil War confined to little more than sporadic resistance on the mainland, and the Communists firmly in control in Peking, the Nationalist Government has shifted its capital to Taipei, on the off-shore island of Formosa. Nationalist Prime Minister Yen Hsi-shan has insisted that his government in exile is the true Government of China. Despite Yen’s claim, many world Governments have already formally recognised Mao Tse-tung’s regime. For some time Formosa has been the favoured “retirement spot” for deposed Chinese Nationalist leaders. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, former President, is expected to arrive soon with other members of his Nationalist staff.

[The people who left chose wisely. Leaving aside the murders, atrocities and famine in Mao’s China, today, sixty-four years later, according to the International Monetary Fund, the Gross Domestic Product per capita in the free China is $38,357 and that in the Communist China $9,055. ]
