9th December, 1949 : With the Chinese Civil War confined to little more than sporadic resistance on the mainland, and the Communists firmly in control in Peking, the Nationalist Government has shifted its capital to Taipei, on the off-shore island of Formosa. Nationalist Prime Minister Yen Hsi-shan has insisted that his government in exile is the true Government of China. Despite Yen’s claim, many world Governments have already formally recognised Mao Tse-tung’s regime. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, former President, is expected to arrive soon with other members of his Nationalist staff.
